Essential Skills for Small Group Pastors
A small group ministry's success hinges upon the pastor's proficiency in a specific set of skills:
1. Relational Builder
Small group ministry demands a strong focus on building and nurturing relationships. The role requires an individual who can establish rapport and engage with others, fostering a welcoming and supportive environment. Building a volunteer team ministry begins with a leader who loved people to within an inch of their lives.
2. Recruiter of High-Capacity Leaders
To build a thriving small group ministry, the pastor must identify and engage competent leaders capable of guiding and supporting multiple groups. This includes developing a strong recruitment strategy to attract and retain these individuals. The bigger the dream, the bigger the need for a team of high-capacity leaders. High-capacity leaders are like eagles, they don't flock, so you have to find them one at a time.

While some leader development can be delegated, the pastor plays a critical role in enhancing the skills and knowledge of group leaders. By recognizing and celebrating the heroic actions of ordinary individuals, they can highlight what God is doing through the movement as a whole. Video testimonies can be shared in worship services and online.
6. Collaboration with Senior Pastor
Building a strong partnership with the senior pastor is crucial. Small group pastors should regularly share compelling stories and recognize the contributions of group leaders, creating a collaborative effort that enhances the ministry's visibility and impact through the lead pastor who is the primary vision caster.

In the background, small group pastors function to create a healthy spiritual environment where everyone is encouraged to grow to spiritually in Christ. They ensure smooth coordination, resource allocation, and support to facilitate the overall success of group leaders and participants.
